In the second half of the 20th century, however, accordion sales were declining; but Hagstrom were there at the beginning of the new guitar boom, producing their first electric, the Hagstrom De Luxe in By this time, Albin had died later to be replaced by his son Karl-Erik , but the companys many years experience of accordion manufacture massively influenced the early guitars, with the use of pearloid sparkle finishes and a preference for push-switches over potentiometers more widely used in American guitars. Over the next two decades, Hagstrom produced a number of interesting and commercially sucessful guitars, many with a nod towards better known American designs, but some quite unique. One important innovation by Hagstrom, and arguably one of the key reasons for their sucess, was the low-action “fastest playing neck in the world” produced by their patented H-shaped “expander-stretcher” truss rod rail. In the early sixties, Hagstrom produced a number of solid bodies that were distributed by different companies worldwide, often given alternate model names and even different brands; for example Hershman in the US labelled some Hagstrom guitars as Goya , whilst Selmer in the UK used the marque Futurama. Guitars like the Corvette and Impala helped cemment Hagstrom’s reputation as a quality builder, and by alternate branding was no longer necessary. In the latter half of the decade solid bodies were selling well, particularly the Hagstrom II and III, as were the semi-acoustic Viking , finally appearing in the hands of Elvis Presley in Hagstrom guitars of the s did conform somewhat to an establishing consensus admittedly Gibson’s of what a guitar should be.. But this was largely beneficial, the Les Paul-style Swede was, and still is, a very highly regarded guitar, perhaps the pinnacle of vintage Hagstrom guitars.

Tweet on Twitter Well, we near the end of the long tale of Hamer USA Guitars, a saga that began in the early s and is today a great success story in American guitardom. The Eclipse Model GECS was a new asymmetrical offset double-cutaway design with short horns, the upper somewhat larger and rounded, the lower more pointed, and a rounded lower bout. The body and glued-in neck were all-mahogany with a black-faced three-and-three Hamer headstock and screened logo.

Why this was done is anybody’s guess. Either it was an attempt to blow out the last few guitars even cheaper, just to be rid of them, or maybe Ovation simply wanted to disassociate themselves from what they saw as a failure. Other than the name on the headstock, nothing was changed. I suppose the Applause GP’s are even more rare than the regular GP’s, but somehow I doubt that this additional rarity makes them any more valuable or desirable.

Photos courtesy of Tobias Albert. The GS and UB: These are basically your typical Korean Fender clones, slightly better than average due to their American assembly, but without that spark of greatness that marks the GP. The GS does have cool Mosrite-style German carving around the edges of the body, rather unusual for a Strat-style guitar, and one UB model had a vibrato, again something not too commonly found on a P-bass knockoff. While neither is common, exactly, there also seems to have been far more of them produced compared to the GP, so finding one today should not be a major problem.

The GS and UB are both real sleepers and offer quite a lot of guitar for the money, not to mention the versatility, exclusivity and interesting history. But when all is said and done, they are merely copy guitars. There’s simply not much there to get excited about. Until somebody like Josh Homme homes in on one and the demand skyrockets, that is.

The general thought that I have posted here in the past is that they were stamped with a letter that stood for the season the instrument was built Summer, Winter, Fall followed by the two digit year. From some recent information that was gleaned from a former Harmony employee that has changed somewhat. I went back through my records of instruments that passed through my hands certain I’d had a W in the past.

Everything I’ve owned a few dozen was marked S or F. Harmony apparently shut down for two weeks every July and there would be a rush to complete instruments by the end of June. I see that is the most likely explanation for the date code. There has also been a conventional wisdom that Harmony did not put serial numbers on their mandolins. The answer there is they kind of did.

It appears that the number after the H is the model number and the number prior is the serial of that batch, made in that time period. In other words, you can’t date a Harmony instrument from the serial number alone. You need the date code. It should also be noted that some of the time that stamped number just isn’t there. Special thanks to Hal Loflin for pointing me towards some great information.

Much of the initial workforce consisted of former Epiphone workers who lost their jobs following their strike and the subsequent relocation of the company from Queens to Philadelphia. Notable also was the Guild string guitar, which used a Jumbo “F” body and dual truss rods in the neck to produce a workhorse instrument with a deep, rich tone distinctive from the chimier twelve-strings put out by Martin.

The company continued to expand, and was sold to the Avnet Corporation, which moved production to Westerly, Rhode Island , in

The history of the Grammer Guitar is a classic American tale – a story of the great traditions in the fine art of luthiery. A story of artists, colorful personalities, and the highs and lows they encountered along the way. The Grammer guitar celebrated its fortieth birthday in the year After all these years, this classic guitar has become quite a collector’s item. A rare piece of americana that came out of the 60’s, and is still being played by guitarists in the new millenium. Family Man In the early s, Billy Grammer, a hard-working musician, great singer, gifted guitarist and good businessman, was finding success and keeping very busy.

He had a big hit record that crossed genres, a membership in the famous Grand Ole Opry, was making radio and television appearances, led sessions in the studio backing other singers, and was gearing up to record his next album. Ever since starting his career as a professional musician, Billy envisioned building the perfect flat top guitar. It would be built to his specifications, combine all the best features of his favorite acoustic guitars, and be made out of the finest materials available.

He had made many connections in the music business and felt the time was right to build the Grammer guitar. Billy grew up the eldest son in a musical family and started playing guitar at an early age.
